The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Data Scientist to work on Climate Hazards within their Artificial Intelligence Lab (https://www.bas.ac.uk/ai/). This role involves working with environmental scientists and machine learning engineers to apply new algorithms to a range of climate-relevant datasets, and deliver informative and actionable information and indices for use by the global climate impact community and decision makers.

The successful post holder will have strong skills in mathematics and statistics with experience in data processing and analysis and able to work as part of a team, as well as independently.

Purpose
Climate hazards are weather and climate ‘extreme events’ that can cause loss of life, injury, or other health impacts, as well as damage and loss to property, infrastructure, livelihoods, service provision, and environmental resources. The purpose of this post is to work with environmental scientists and machine learning engineers to apply new algorithms to a range of climate-relevant datasets, and deliver informative and actionable information and indices for use by the global climate impact community and decision makers.

Qualification:
A PhD degree in a quantitative subject (or equivalent)

Duties:
# Lead the analysis and writing for science papers, together with senior scientists in Cambridge
# Processing large N-dimensional gridded climate data products
# Apply and help develop new machine learning algorithms
# Liaising with environmental scientists and machine learning engineers within BAS, Cambridge and other UK University partners
# Manage code on GitHub (or equivalent), and publish Jupyer notebooks for the UK AI/environmental science community
# Help develop data pipelines and interfaces to enable non-specialists to easily access climate impact metrics
# To present work at national and international meetings # Any other tasks, within the remit of the role, as required by the Director
